Abstract

Abstract: Why should astronomers care for information retrieval? Should they in fact care at all? Why should they not just wait for general purpose tools developed by IIR professionals to come onto the market? This set of questions inspires another set. What is specific about astronomy? Are Astronomical Data Centres still needed in the era of electronic publishing, CD-ROMs and portable data bases? Several contributors to this volume do emphasize the dramatic growth in volume and complexity of data and information produced by astronomy. Some also stress the fast rise in the publication rate resulting in the same “discoveries” being made three or four times over. Very similar facts can be observed in physics, chemistry or biology. In this regard, there is nothing very specific to any of these disciplines, and the remedy, if any, will probably be a common one.
